Custom Scissor Case for Dog Groomers

Some time ago, a customer from Hyogo Prefecture came to us with their beloved poodle to discuss a custom scissor case. Having been used to seeing toy poodles, I was quite impressed by the dignified and handsome appearance of their standard poodle.

Pre-consultation requests

Before their visit, we received the following requests by email:

• Must hold 8 pairs of scissors
• 7.5-inch scissors must not hit the bottom of the case
• Curved (R) scissors must not hit the inside of the case
• Easy to carry due to frequent travel
• Durability is paramount, weight is not a concern
• Had not found a satisfactory custom scissor case in the past

While we primarily make scissor cases for hairdressers, we have a proven track record of serving dog groomers, which is why they consulted us.

Insights from the consultation

As a hairdresser myself, I believe I am well-versed in the use of scissor cases for hairdressers. However, I wasn't entirely confident in proposing solutions for how groomers use them in the field.

However, this customer had a strong vision for their scissor case, and I was eager to meet their expectations. During the consultation, they brought the scissors they normally use, and we had a thorough discussion.

Design points for the dog groomer's scissor case

The scissors they brought were almost identical to those used by hairdressers, but they had a greater variety, including several curved (R) scissors. With the request for 8 slots, we decided to customize our base model "-ww-" to create an original 8-slot scissor case.

Through our discussion, I learned that groomers need to use different scissors depending on the dog breed and the area being trimmed (such as the face or between the toes). This made me realize that even if they look similar, different professions require different tools.

For a scissor case, the ease of use largely depends on the "fit of the scissor storage compartments." If it's too narrow, the scissors won't go in all the way; if it's too wide, they might rattle around and fall out. The ideal is a "moderately secure fit" when storing.

Hairdresser scissors are generally designed for 5.5 to 6.5 inches, with dimensions averaged across different manufacturers. This time, we needed to accommodate a wide range of sizes from 4 to 7.5 inches (including curved scissors), so we ultimately created three different sized compartments.

As a result, we achieved a design that comfortably holds 8 different types of scissors, satisfying the customer.

Just like hairdressers, groomers typically settle on the types of scissors and tools they need as they gain experience, allowing for detailed adjustments like those made in this case when deciding on storage locations.
The -ww- model is also designed for easy maintenance, ensuring groomers, who often accumulate fine hair, can keep it clean.
